Locking and Blocking
John Huang, Principle Consultant SQLNotes.info
Locking and Blocking is one of the most important concepts SQL professionals must know. Understanding it is as important as writing T-SQL and retrieving data from proper indexes. It's powerful that all Transaction Isolation Levels are implemented by locks ONLY (except snapshot related isolation level). With this knowledge, you can explain why your SQL Server behaves like that and also you can tell the preferable locking behavior under different circumstances. Furthermore, It's not the only thing internally used by SQL Server. It's also a tool being exposed to programmers/DBAs since version 7.0 in which it allows you to build your own concurrency controls.
